Powerscourt’s David Shiel saved his best round for last as he shot up the leaderboard at the Cape Provence Open at George and Kingswood Golf Club.

Shiel posted a three-under 69 to climb into a share of eleventh place on one-under-par, nine shots shy of eventual winner Wermer Deyzel.

After opening rounds of 72 and 74, the Irishman started his final round quickly with a brace of opening birdies.

Shiel added a third birdie in five holes before giving them all back across a two-hole stretch after double bogeying the ninth hole and bogeying the tenth.

That sparked him back into life as he bounced back with successive birdies, and a bogey on 13 was canceled out by a birdie on 14.

After a rollercoaster period of one par in seven holes, Shiel finished steadily with a birdie on 16 and two closing pars.
