Matthew McClean’s superb run in the South African Amateur Championship was halted at the semi-final stage as he fell to a 2&1 defeat to South African Kyle de Beer at Mount Edgecombe CC.

A bogey on 17 for McClean proved costly as he bowed out of the championship meaning de Beer will face Frenchman and South African Strokeplay winner Martin Couvra in the decider.

The Malone golfer edged in front early with a birdie on the third but was pegged back on the next before falling 1 DOWN after seven holes and the scoreline remained so until the 17th hole.

In a tightly contested match, birdies were at a premium with each player just registering one birdie meaning whoever made the least mistakes was going to claim the spoils.

Both players halved nine successive holes, including a halve in bogeys on the par-3 12th, before McClean’s week was ended on 17.

The US Mid-Amateur champion was a comfortable 3&2 winner over Daniel Bennett in the morning quarter final.
