Anna Foster carded a rock-solid even par opener to help the Auburn Women’s Golf Team to a comfortable eight shot lead after round one of the Nexus Collegiate at Albany Golf Course.

The Elm Park star sits in a tie for fifth overnight on the individual table after posting four birdies in an impressive opening effort.

Foster sits just one stroke back of a four-way tie for first place where teammate Carys Worby managed a one-under par effort in her first collegiate outing. Four Tigers finished the round in the top-10 individually.

“A really strong opening round from our team,” said a pleased Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. “It’s a tough golf course with strong winds today, so even par by the team was very impressive. I’m especially proud of Carys [Worby] and Katie [Cranston] for their good play in each of their first collegiate rounds!”

Auburn currently holds an eight shot lead over second place Wake Forest with Lauren Walsh in a tie for 14th after carding four birdies of her own in a rollercoaster three-over par 75 for the Deacs.

That’s the same score as Irish international teammate Aine Donegan who carded just one birdie for LSU but like Walsh, had a triple-bogey ‘8’ on her card.

Arizona State’s Beth Coulter completed the Irish scoring with a solitary birdie in her five-over par round of 77.

The opening day belonged to Auburn, however, and particularly Worby whose college golf debut was highlighted by a birdie on both the 11th hole and the 14th hole to give her a tie for the tournament lead.

“It was a fun day, but it was windy so I was pleased with the way I struck my irons,” Worby said after the round. “I left myself in good positions to make pars as well as some birdies when the putts allowed.”
