Rebekah Gardner is the leading Irishwoman after round one of the 93rd Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship in Setubal.

The Clandeboye native shot a five-over 77 on what was a disappointing day for the Irish overall with Aideen Walsh, Marina Joyce-Moreno and Kate Lanigan also struggling.

Gardner, who was runner-up in last year’s English Open, was left to rue two double-bogeys on the fifth and thirteenth holes in an otherwise OK effort.

The teenager also carded three birdies and four bogeys and had it not been for the two blemishes she might be closer to the lead which is held by Spain’s Cayetana Fernandez and Denmark’s Johanna Axelsen on two-under.

Lahinch’s Walsh and Spanish based Joyce-Moreno are a shot further back of Gardner on six-over after rounds of 78 while Lanigan of The Hermitage is on thirteen-over.
