Robert Moran produced a stunning finish of four consecutive birdies to claim a fifth place finish at the Australia Master of the Amateurs at Southern Golf Club as he got his 2023 season off to a flying start.

Moran signed for a final round of two-under 70 and move to six-under-par after birdies on 15, 16, 17 and 18 saw him rise seven places up the leaderboard and nine shots shy of runaway winner John Gough.

The Castle golfer was enduring a frustrating afternoon Down Under after dropping shots on the first, seventh, twelfth and thirteenth holes with just two birdies on the sixth and eighth holes.

At two-over for the round at that point, he finished with a flourish to claim his fourth top-5 finish abroad in the last twelve months as he looks to secure a Walker Cup spot for Great Britain and Ireland in St Andrews later this year.

Englishman Gough looks set to be part of that team after he added the Master of the Amateurs to his Lytham Trophy and Spanish Amateur titles.

Gough, whose father hails from Co. Meath, shot a final round of 68 to cruise to a four-shot win on fifteen-under.

It was an early birdie barrage that ultimately sealed the deal for Gough who was six-under for the round after just ten holes and bogeys on 12 and 14 were left unpunished by Scottish runner-up Gregor Tait who saw his challenge fade after a double-bogey six on 14.
