Unless you’ve been living under a rock – and it would have to be volcanic – you’d be aware that winter has arrived in all its misery. Short days, long nights, condensation dripping down the insides of the windows, boiling the kettle to thaw out the car. Whoever decided this is the most wonderful time of the year needs to have their head examined… It definitely wasn’t a golfer.

It’s been a number of days now that the courses have been closed for play, though you’d have to have a bit of Tom Crean about you to get a goo on for golf at this time of year. Yet while you and me can live without golf for a few weeks during winter, our PGA pros propping up the desk from dawn until dusk need all the help they can muster to get through to spring.

Thankfully, we can all do our bit to support them.

Tis the season to spend if you’re lucky enough to have a bit of disposable income about you. If you have a golfer in your life, even better. The PGA pro is an invaluable asset to any golfer, and they provide a plethora of services that can be transformed into the ideal gift this Christmas.

Nothing says love like a voucher, and €50 or €100 is money well spent, gifting the invaluable knowledge of a PGA pro to the golfer in your life while helping out the pro – often the lifeblood of the golf club – at the same time.

Many pros will be advertising special rates for lessons at this time of year and you could nab a block of lessons for a bargain to use over winter, the ideal time to hone your craft ahead of the new season.

If your clubs are hibernating for winter, why not use this time to drop in your bats to be re-gripped. Forking out for a new set in a spending crisis is a big ask but re-gripping your sticks can make them feel like new and improve your game, and better still, your PGA pro knows exactly how to do it.

Courses might be closed of late but most pro shops remain open nationwide and no doubt the shelves are stocked with winter essentials to get you through to spring. Your PGA pro is an encyclopaedia of knowledge and will be on hand to steer you in the right direction, whether you’re buying for yourself, or that loved one who abandons you for six hours of a weekend 52 times a year just to shout at a little white ball.

If it’s the latter, I guarantee the recipient of your gift will be doubly grateful, not just because they’re reaping the rewards of a cool present, but because by consequence, they’re giving back to a PGA pro who has undoubtedly helped them out over the past year. Who doesn’t love killing two birds with one voucher?

From custom-fitting to club repairs, to incorporating the latest technology into teaching, and to knowing their way around golf retail so you’ll feel like you have your own personal shopper, paying a visit to the local pro shop is sure to unlock the doors to the ideal Christmas gift for the golfer in your life, all the while supporting an essential service for any golf club worth their salt.

Still not convinced? Pick up the phone and talk to the PGA pro. I promise you won’t regret it.
