Keith Egan holds a share of the early lead at the 2022 Abu Dhabi Amateur Championship with three Irish players inside the top-7 at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club.

This is the fifth staging of the championship with the winner securing an invite to the DP World Tour’s HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship next month.

Egan of Carton House shares the lead with Egypt’s Issa About El Ela after a four-under 68. Egan, who played a star role in Carton House’s Senior Cup win in Tramore this year, carded six birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The Newbridge native started well with birdies on the second and sixth before dropping his first shot of the day on the ninth. Egan responded well with a brace of birdies and after a bogey on 13 he put on a strong finish with birdies on 15 and 17 to jump into a share of the lead.

There was already an Irish feel this week as West Waterford’s Gary Hurley is the ambassador at Saadiyat Beach but the upper echelons of the leaderboard is littered with Irish players with Carton House’s Marc Boucher and Portmarnock’s Brandon St John sharing 7th place on one-under-par.

Alistair Hess from the Els Club in Dubai is two shot further back in 13th on one-over while his club mate Dan Byrne is on plus three.

Powerscourt’s David Shiel is on four-over after an opening 76.
