More than one third of golf clubs delivered Golf Ireland’s Get into Golf programme in 2022 making it the largest participation rate for the introductory initiative after its ninth year.

123 clubs hosted the programme with 3,198 people joining of which 61% followed up by obtaining golf club membership.

People who participate in the Get into Golf programme can avail of lessons from the PGA Professional and on course tuition over a period of eight weeks that allows new players to learn new skills and meet and play alongside people of a similar ability while immersing themselves in the club.

If a participant goes on to join their respective club, Golf Ireland waive their affiliation fees for the first year while providing them with Golf Ireland merchandise.

Clubs who participate in the programme are granted advice and resources from their designated Club Development and Club Support Officer.

Gobnait Walsh, Get into Golf Programme coordinator for Athy Golf Club in Kildare said “The Get into Golf Programme was a great success for our club. We took Neil’s (Golf Ireland Club Development & Club Support Officer) advice and kept our numbers small. This ensured that all participants got the best possible start which included plenty of individual attention from PGA Professional, lots of help and advice from our willing and able volunteers and great ‘craic during scrambles and course activities. We had 22 participants of which 15 joined the club.”

Carlow Golf Club participated in the programme and the initiative was a huge hit.

Norah Houlihan said “It was a fantastic experience, highly recommended as a hobby and great social outlet with a club that welcomes and looks after all your need. All round fantastic program , great for the heart and soul.”

This was echoed by fellow participant Ann Hickey who said “It was really enjoyable and challenging. Worth joining and everyone is so patient and encouraging.”
