Ireland are thirteenth through 36 holes of the World Junior Girls Golf Championship sponsored by Sargent Farms as Spain opened up a two-shot lead at Angus Glen Golf Club.

It was a tougher day for the Girls in Green with Rebekah Gardner and Katie Poots a combined fourteen-over for the day.

Ireland are on twenty-over-par while Spain took advantage of a disastrous day for host nation Canada to lead on five-under-par.

Clandeboye’s Gardner found herself four-over after four following a tough start that saw her drop shots on the first, third and two on the fourth.

She rallied with a birdie on the par-5 9th to turn in 39 before giving it back on the eleventh. In truth, it proved to be a steady round of golf for the final fourteen holes with the 18-year-old picking up shots on the 14th and 15th although she closed with backto-back bogeys for a 76.

Gardner is inside the top-20 on the individual leaderboard on six-over in a share of 18th place and she is just five shots outside the top-5.

Knock’s Katie Poots shot a ten-over 82 but played her last six holes in one-under to ensure her card was counting for round two after Marina Joyce Moreno faltered at the finish to shoot the same score.
