The final AIG Cups and Shields series began at Knightsbrook Hotel, Spa and Golf resort where 16 clubs had their sights on All-Ireland glory.
East Cork, Castlerock, Ardee, Galway Bay, Adare Manor, Mannan Castle, Edmondstown and Mount Wolseley were the AIG Intermediate Cup quarterfinalists and began the week’s proceedings.
Kate Daly, Mary Walsh and Claire O’Brien were the points scorers for East Cork, who are bidding to follow the lead of the club’s AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield team who won the All-Ireland last weekend. East Cork will be joined in the semi-finals by Galway Bay, Adare Manor and Edmondstown.
With two teams in the mix today, Edmondstown’s AIG Pierce Purcell team were less fortunate in their quarterfinal as they came up against a strong Abbeyleix side, loosing by 3.5 matches to 1.5.
Connacht Champions Castlebar, Ulster’s Mayobridge and Munster’s Lismore have also progressed to the AIG Pierce Purcell semi-finals, providing a wide geographical spread of teams still in contention.
The AIG Intermediate Cup semi-finals will tee off tomorrow from 08.00am and the AIG Pierce Purcell matches will begin from 09.20. Friday will also see the beginning of the AIG Women’s Junior Cup with the quarter finals teeing off from 10.40.
