David Higgins secured his place on the Great Britain and Ireland team for the 30th PGA Cup matches this September when DJ Russell’s charges will travel Stateside to take on the USA.

The Waterville professional earned his spot after finishing in a share of 5th place at the weekend’s PGA Professional Championship at Slaley Hall as Matthew Cort won in a playoff.

Higgins, who won the Feidhlim McKibbin Memorial PGA Pro-Am at Dundalk, joins compatriot Simon Thornton who had already guaranteed his place on the team after a top-3 finish at the PGA Playoffs at PGA National Slieve Russell earlier this year.

Russell’s side is beginning to take shape with all the qualifying spots filled up while he will have two captains picks remaining to complete the team.

Cort, Daniel Whitby-Smith, Ashley Mansell and Simon Lily join Higgins, Adam Keogh, Greig Hutcheon and Thornton.

DJ Russell commented: “It’s been a very exciting day and we’ve now got a very impressive line-up.

“This year we seem to have quite a few rookies and they are very solid players. They’ll certainly give the American players something to think about.

“Matt (Cort) is a very solid player and I think he’ll flourish at Foxhills. They’re all extremely good players and it’s great to see Dan (Whitby-Smith) do so well. Unfortunately he lost in the play-off but it’s nice to see him playing well and in the team.”

The PGA Cup will be played at Foxhills Club & Resort from September 16-18.
