Entries are now closed for the first major of the year with the line-up including nine of the world’s top-10 players along with 29 major champions for The Chevron Championship, taking place next week, March 31 – April 3, 2022, at Mission Hills Country Club, Rancho Mirage, California.
With 15 players still able to secure their position via this week’s JTBC Classic, there are 24 countries represented in the field, 59 LPGA winners who have won a total of 246 tournaments and 33 Solheim Cup players with more than 90 appearances between them as World No. 13 Patty Tavatanakit attempts her first ever title defence.
Ireland boasts a two-strong representation with Stephanie Meadow qualified courtesy of her tied-19th finish at the tournament 12 months ago – then named the ANA Inspiration – with Leona Maguire progressing into all five Majors via her maiden LPGA win at the Drive On in February.
The aforementioned major champions in the field boast a total of 45 majors with 2016 Olympic Gold medalist Inbee Park owning the highest tally of seven, including The Chevron Championship in 2013. The popular South Korean World No.6, who has a further 14 LPGA titles to her name, commented:
“There is always a lot of anticipation for The Chevron Championship among the players as it is the first Major of the season but this year, I think the excitement is raised to a whole new level. We have a new title sponsor in Chevron, we are welcoming the amazing fans back to Mission Hills for the first time since 2019 and it’s the final edition at Rancho Mirage so, the very last chance to get to make the winner’s jump into Poppie’s Pond. It is going to be a huge week for women’s golf, and I am hoping I can play my best and put myself in contention for what will be a really historic edition of the Championship.”
Minjee Lee, winner of the 2021 Amundi Evian Championship and currently ranked World No. 4, said: “I feel like my preparations are going really well for The Chevron Championship and I am excited to get back to Rancho Mirage. It’s exciting to see how the first event under our new title sponsor Chevron will look and, of course, as the final event at Mission Hills, it’s our last chance to win and make the historic winner’s leap into Poppie’s Pond.
“I think the course suits my game pretty well and, I think the confidence I gained in winning the Amundi Evian Championship last year should really help me going forward, so I am really looking forward to our first Major of 2022.”
While there are 10 past Champions competing in the Championship, there will also be a total of 15 past Champions at Rancho Mirage to attend a very special Champions dinner on Monday night, honouring the incredible roll of Champions that have won this coveted title including Amy Alcott, Pat Bradley, Juli Inkster, Betsy King, Sandra Post, Judy Rankin and Patty Sheehan.
After a two-year Covid-inflicted hiatus, fans have been quick to claim their opportunity to be at The Chevron Championship once more with several ticketing categories already sold out. As well as being able to enjoy watching the world’s best women players battle it out over the iconic Dinah Shore Tournament Course, there will be plenty of activities off course for spectators to enjoy with a special family focus-themed fan oasis. Additionally, on Saturday, LPGA*USGA Girls Golf members and amateurs will have the chance to team up with LPGA Legends for the Legends & Juniors Pro-Am, hosted by Amy Alcott. The final round of The Chevron Championship will feature an LPGA*USGA Girls Golf activation with clinic stations, a scavenger hunt, and the opportunity to watch the champion jump into Poppie’s Pond for the final time.
Tickets are now on sale for The Chevron Championship and all details and ticket options available can be found at www.thechevronchampionship.com.
Last year, Chevron U.S.A. Inc. was announced as the new title sponsor of The Chevron Championship (formerly the ANA Inspiration) through a six-year relationship with the LPGA, increasing the prize fund for the 2022 Championship by over 60% to $5 million. ANA, who supported the tournament for seven editions, will continue as a partner in 2022.
