Jonathan Yates and Eoin O’Brien came out the other side of a howling gale to take hop honours as the latest TaylorMade Winter Series event became a bit of a battle at Portmarnock Links.
92 players were greeted by strong winds gusting up to the high 40’s km/h and with the wind battering in from the west, it made the home stretch particularly trying.
It didn’t put Naas professional Yates off his stride, however. Out in two-over par after trading four bogeys with two birdies to the turn, the Alps Tour regular steadied the ship on the way home, not dropping a shot and adding birdies at 11 and 13 to sign for level par, taking the Nett prize with a gutsy 71.
In the Gross, Clontarf pro O’Brien made the turn in two-under, the best showing of the day, despite a bogey on 9 before grinding his way home with bogeys at 12 and 16 before signing for a 71 of his own, a superb score in the conditions.
Well done to the winners for managing parity with the course on such a challenging day. Next week is once again fully booked and everyone is asked to get their bookings in for over the Christmas period.
