Simon Thornton hit the ground running on the PGA in Ireland circuit with victory in the Irish Life Delgany Pro-Am.
The Tulfarris professional went into the event with plenty of confidence following his recent victory in a Northern region event at Blackwood GC. That confidence boost clearly lifted his game at Delgany as he grabbed eight birdies in total, with his only dropped shot coming at the par-three 11th.
Thornton posted a seven-under par 62 to edge out Shane Jenkinson (St Margaret’s Golf & CC) at the renowned County Wicklow venue and said; “I think conditions suited me to be honest. I’m hitting my driver all over the place at the minute but I didn’t have to use it. I could knock it down the fairway and then find the green as I had a decent bit of control with the irons.
“I’m looking forward to a good run of tournaments over the next few weeks ahead of the Irish Championship at Carne Golf Links. I really feel like I need to be playing competitively and getting some rounds under my belt.”
Michael McGeady (Evolve Golf) led amateur partners John Burns, Brendan Foley and Leo Harman to victory in the team event with 96 points.
