After a couple of non eventful weeks post PGA Championship there is plenty of meat on the bone as the US Women’s Open gets underway and Muirfield Village plays host to a Signature Event with meaning at the Memorial Tournament.
US Women’s Open
Olivia Mehaffey makes her first major championship appearance since 2020 as she gears up for her third US Women’s Open at Riviera Country Club.
Mehaffey pre-qualified into the second women’s major of the season by topping the qualifier last month and has a great opportunity to put herself back on the golfing map with a strong performance around Riv where the $12 million purse offers the biggest payday to any winner of the majors, a cheque for $2.4 million.
The Tandragee woman has made one cut from her previous six major appearances and will be looking to defy her world ranking of 1,098th.
Leona Maguire will tee it up for the eighth time at the US Women’s Open and she has a best finish of T8 in 2022 when she was arguably at the peak of her powers.
It’s been an inconsistent season so far for the 31-year-old but a top-10 last week at the Shoprite Classic has given her some renewed confidence heading to Los Angeles.
Following a run of three missed cuts, she has seen an upturn in form since working with Sean Foley in the US. The Cavan star has been gradually climbing the world rankings and has moved from outside the top-100 to 72nd in the world and is 26th on the CME Globe rankings.
PGA Tour
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry return to competitive action at this week’s Memorial Tournament in Muirfield Village as they compete for the $20m purse on offer at Jack’s place.
Neither player has managed to earn that coveted handshake from 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus but they will be eager to click back into gear as they embark on a run to the US Open in two weeks time.
McIlroy has been drawn alongside Justin Thomas while Lowry will tee it up with Sungjae Im.
When Scottie Scheffler tees off this he’ll be looking to break a 15-year drought on the PGA TOUR. The back to back winner of this event is looking to join Tiger Woods as the only player to win this tournament three times in a row (1999-2001).
