Sara Byrne is ready to make up for lost time as she makes her return from an elbow injury at this week’s Amundi German Masters.

Byrne has missed the first three months of the Ladies European Tour season after she fractured and partially tore two ligaments in her elbow following a freak fall on an icy surface after what she described as one of the best gym sessions of her life.

Having gained some momentum to take into the winter following a late season run to keep her LET card for this term, Byrne’s future was plunged into doubt but she hopes she can regain the confidence that helped her finish last year strongly and enjoy a successful season.

“It was a nice four months at home, well three months with a month of depression and injury sadness. It just feels so good to be back,” said Byrne in a walk and talk video with the Ladies European Tour.

“I had a great gym session and just fell on my elbow in a bad way and fractured the radial head of it and partially tore both of the ligaments.

“Nobody knew how it was going to heal I was told I might go back playing golf I might not, who knows so I’m just so grateful to be here. It took a lot of rehab and a lot of physio sessions. I just took it for what it was, I couldn’t change it. I enjoyed the time at home I got to spend some time with family and friends and I actually loved it.”

The Dromoland Castle star was determined to keep herself fit during her initial recovery process. So much so, that she even took up running. Her spare time was also well spent binge watching Desperate Housewives.

“I started running so if anyone knows me, I hate running with a burning passion. I started running because I felt like I could do nothing else so that’s how bad it got. A lot of TV shows I nearly finished Desperate Housewives it’s eight seasons and I got to the back end of season seven so that took a lot of my time.”

Once she was cleared to hit golf balls again, Byrne has been putting in the hard yards on the driving range as she eagerly anticipated her return to competitive golf, something she missed desperately. Not only has she missed getting a card in her back pocket but she has missed the LET family.

“I’m a competitive person I love having competition so not having that was tough and just being around the girls we have such a fun little family on the LET. I had a lot of FOMO when they were off in Australia and Mauritius so I was sad to be missing that. I am just really happy to be back competing again and not missing out on anymore things that happen!

“I’m just so appreciative of being back I want to do as well as I can, win, try and win but I don’t know how my elbow will feel or hold up so it’s going to be a learning curve coming back like this so we will just have to wait and see.”
