Liam Grehan was delighted to see his aggressive approach pay off as he fired a career-low 63 to surge into contention at the halfway stage of the opening Sunshine Tour event of the season.
Grehan (-8) fired nine birdies to move into a share of 6th place and three shots off the lead at the Mediclinic Invitational and he feels being more positive and attacking more flags was one of the things he wanted to do to capitalise on an improved short game.
“It was nice to start back with a low round this week,” said Grehan who retained his card at Q-School with a 21-under total. “I feel like I’ve been doing the right stuff for a long time but not getting the results but it’s starting to click a bit so try and keep it going over the next two days.”
Grehan previously played Sunshine Q-School at this venue twice and he made full use of his experience as he backed up an opening birdie with birdies on the 5th, 6th and 8th before roaring to the clubhouse with three birdies in four holes from the 10th, back to back birdies on 16 and 17 with his only blemish a three-putt bogey on 18.
“Looking forward to the next couple of days, missed three or four inside ten feet, I was striping it so it was nice to give myself chances!
“We’ve had too much of looking at the cut in the last year or so. I just played more aggressively, my short game is a lot better so I am more comfortable with aiming at flags and hopefully that will stand to me over the rest of the season.”
At the top, Austin Bautista and Keegan Mclachlan share the lead on eleven-under with South African duo Keegan Thomas and Wynand Dingle perched in third on ten-under.
