It was a challenging day for the Irish contingent as Lauren Walsh and Anna Foster failed to capitalise on strong opening rounds, slipping six shots off the lead at the Amundi German Masters.

Walsh struggled to an even-par 73, mixing three birdies with three bogeys to sit in a tie for 22nd alongside Foster. The Dublin native was within striking distance until a costly double bogey on the par-five 16th derailed her round.

Germany’s Helen Briem and Sweden’s Ellinor Südow are tied for the lead at eight-under-par after 36 holes at the 2025 Amundi German Masters. The duo were among the overnight leaders following opening rounds of 68 (-5) on the North Course at Green Eagle Golf Courses in Hamburg, and each followed up with a 70 (-3) on day two.

Home favourite Briem made an electrifying start with three birdies in her first three holes before stumbling with three bogeys on holes five, six, and seven, bringing her back to level par for the day. However, the LET winner regained her rhythm on the back nine, carding birdies on the 10th, 14th, and 18th holes to reclaim a share of the lead.

“I think it was an awesome start. Patricia [Schmidt] and I were both -3 after the first three holes, which was just incredible,” said the teenager. “I struggled a bit after that, but I kept it together on the back nine. I hit every green on the back nine. The three greens I missed, I made bogey, so that was key today. It was very solid. Playing with Patricia was so much fun, and the crowd was amazing. I’m really happy.”

It was a memorable 27th birthday for Südow, who carded six birdies and three bogeys to join Briem at eight-under-par. “It’s a really good birthday,” said the Swede. “I had a wonderful day out there. It was tougher today, but I was able to roll in some birdies, so it was fun.”

Singapore’s Shannon Tan fired a 69 (-4) on day two in Hamburg to move into outright third place, just one shot behind the leaders at seven-under-par. The Olympian was bogey-free, rolling in birdies at the first, seventh, 11th, and 15th holes.

“It was a day of hitting fairways and greens all day,” said the LET winner. “I think I missed one fairway and two greens, but I missed them in the right spots, which definitely helped. This course is quite challenging; it’s a ball-striker’s course. You have to be in the right spots for certain pin positions, so I think it went to plan today.”

Canice Screene struggled, carding four double bogeys en route to a six-over-par 79, missing the cut.

Foster tees off on Saturday morning at 10:18 Irish time, with Walsh following one group later at 10:29. Both will need a score in the 60s to climb back into contention.
