Robert Moran surged into contention on day two of the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or, as Jacopo Vecchi Fossa took control of the tournament on moving day in Metz.
Moran carded six birdies in a five-under-par 65, which leaves him in a tie for second place on seven-under-par, four back of leader Fossa. Ronan Mullarney’s challenge stalled with a level-par 70, to leave him five shots back, still with a chance of victory on Sunday. Hugh Foley carded a solid two-under par 68 to climb into the top-10, on a good day for the Irish on the Alps Tour.
Fossa followed his opening round of 4-under-par 66 with an impressive 7-under-par 63, carding eight birdies with his only bogey of the day coming on the 10th.
Reflecting on his performance, Fossa said, “My round today began straight away well as I made birdies right away on holes 1, 3, and 4. My game was good, as well as my putting, I had good feelings all around. Today I also nearly made a hole-in-one and holed out from a greenside bunker, so let’s say it was an untypical round. I only missed one shot throughout the entire day on the 10th hole where I made a bogey, but after that, I was able to make some crucial putts coming in for birdie to sign for my 7-under-par.”
Asked about the final day, Fossa added: “Tomorrow, I will play against the course and not the rest of the field, aiming to hit the fewest shots and maintain the momentum I had today. I have good feelings and will bring them into tomorrow’s round. I won’t look at the leaderboard, focus on my game, and see what happens once we end the round.”
Joining Moran in a three-way tie for 2nd place is Frenchman Augustin Hole and Italian Luca Memeo, and they, along with Mullarney will hope for a fast start tomorrow to track down leader Fossa.
Foley gets his final round underway at 9.20am Irish time, with Mullarney at 9.31am and Moran at 9.53am.
