They practice together so they might as well play together. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have been paired in the same group for the opening two rounds of the US Open Championship at Oakmont.
Justin Rose will join the Irish duo and complete the three-ball which has been given an early, late starting time for Thursday and Friday.
The trio will tee off at 07:40 local time and 13:25.
Both Rose and McIlroy have clinched US Open titles in the past. Rose claimed his one and only major at the 2013 edition at Merrion while McIlroy won the first of his five majors at Congressional in 2011.
Lowry is yet to add to his 2019 Open Championship victory but was second here in 2016 after he saw a four shot lead slip in the final round to Dustin Johnson.
However, the Offaly man is pleased to be with McIlroy again having played alongside him in the final round at Pebble Beach and during the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
We’re practising tomorrow morning again, so we’ll be sick of each other by Friday, but hopefully we both play well and give ourselves a run at the weekend.
“I played with Rory in the first two rounds of Bay Hill this year and I was well up there,” he added. “So, yeah, I love playing with Rory, and I think we’ve got a great group there with Justin Rose as well.
“Everybody gets on very well, but when you’re out there, there’s not too much chit-chat. There’s not much fun out there. But it will be nice.”
World number one and overwhelming favourite Scottie Scheffler has been handed a late, early draw alongside Viktor Hovland and two-time major winner Collin Morikawa.
They will take to the course at 13:25 local time on Thursday before returning at 07:40 on Friday morning.
