Darren Clarke fired a second round of 69 to move to within five shots of the overnight lead heading into the final round of the Insperity Invitational.
Clarke lies in a share of thirteenth place on four-under and will be looking to chase down Mike Weir and Retief Goosen in Sunday’s final round.
The 2011 Open champion started well with three successive birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th.
Clarke couldn’t quite keep his momentum rolling to get himself firmly into contention and a run of six straight pars was arrested by a bogey on the fourth.
He did finish with a flourish and birdied the seventh but he will need a low one and a prayer if he is to notch his first title since the 2022 Senior Open.
Pádraig Harrington is in a share of 40th place on level-par after a second round of 71.
Weir and Goosen are tied at the top on nine-under after rounds of 70 and 67 respectively and they are one clear of YE Yang and Miguel Anfel Jimenez.
