Darren Clarke is three shots off the lead at the Insperity Invitational despite playing just nine holes of his opening round before play was suspended overnight due to lightning at the Woodlands, Texas.

Clarke created his own sparks early on in his round as he opened with back to back birdies but he gave those shots back on the fifth and eighth holes before finishing his front nine with a birdie to turn in 35.

It leaves the 2011 Open champion in a share of 22nd place on one-under, while Pádraig Harrintgon is two shots further back on one-over after nine holes.

Ernie Els is part of an eight-way share of the lead on four-under. The Big Easy had completed just eight holes of his opening round and he is alongside Chad Campbell, YE Yang, Mike Weir, Thongchai Jaidee, Ken Tanigawa, Billy Andrade and Brett Quigley.
