Rowan Lester is the leading Irishman after the first round of the First Stage of Asian Tour Q-School (Section B) at Blue Canyon Country Club.

Lester is currently in a share of 19th place on one-under after a 71, five shots off the early pace set by Spaniard Enrique Marin and Thailand’s Chonjarern Baramithanaseth.

The Hermitage man started steadily with a birdie on his second hole and turned in level-par 36 after giving a shot back on the fifth.

A birdie, par, birdie run after the turn saw him climb into the top-20 and he is well placed to advance to the Final Stage of Qualifying next month.

Meanwhile, Michael Young is two shots further back on one-over after three bogeys in four holes brought a rollercoaster round to a disappointing end and a 73.

Young was two-under after ten holes but unfortunately dropped shots on the 12th, 14th and 15th to fall back into the pack in 45th position.

The Kerry native started quickly with two birdies in four holes before giving those shots back with a double bogey six on the fifth.

Young, who plied most of his trade in 2022 on the Alps Tour, birdied the sixth and bogeyed the seventh before back-to-back birdies either side of the turn moved him to –2 before his stumbling finish.

Tullamore’s Stuart Grehan also endured a sour finish after a promising start. The 29-year-old was two-under after birdies on the first and fifth but dropped as many shots on six and seven.

Grehan carded three bogeys in his final six holes to slip well down the leaderboard into 64th place on three-over after a disappointing 75.
