Leona Maguire and her team suffered bitter disappointment at the Aramco Team Series – New York as they failed to convert their overnight lead into a win.

Team Maguire, which contained Liz Young, Tvesa Malik and former NFL wide receiver Golden Tate, had led going into the second day of the tournament at Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in New York after a combined 11-under on day one.

But the Cavan star would see her team only finish in fifth place as, while they had another decent combined day, they would only follow it up with an eight-under 64 to reach 19-under-par.

While that would be a sensational individual score, in a team competition it wasn’t good enough, and Maguire had to watch as Team Johanna Gustavsson stole in and claimed the success.

The Swede, whose team included Jessica Karlsson, Karolin Lampert and amateur Jennifer Rosenberg, had a blistering day by playing their front nine in an incredible 10-under, then returned in seven-under for an outrageous 17-under day.

Combined with their opening round that set the clubhouse target at 24-under-par and it would prove to be the winning score, beating Team Nelly Korda by one shot in New York.

Korda will hope to make up for her near miss with the individual title as she sits one shot behind leader Lexi Thompson heading into the weekend, the latter leading by a shot at eight-under-par following a bogey-free 65 at Trump Links.

Another Swedish star, Madelene Sagström, is solo third at five-under-par after carding a 69 on day two, while Canada’s Brooke Henderson is on her own in fourth at four-under-par.
