Castleknock’s Paul Coughlan’s aggressive play paid dividends as he took advantage of the favourable afternoon conditions to move into contention after the opening day of the Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open Championship.

Coughlan took driver off most tees and it set the foundation for his two-under 70 which has him in a share of fourth place, three shots adrift of early leader Harley Smith of England.

The Dubliner had a mixed bag with six birdies and four bogeys including a pair of three putts on the back nine as he continued his fine form having finished 5th at the Munster Amateur and lost in a playoff to club mate Quentin Carew in the Rosslare Scratch Cup.

“I drove it really well so I gave myself a lot of chances was disappointed with a couple of three putts coming in but overall a very solid day.

“It was probably the luck of the draw today, the morning lads got the worst of the conditions there was only about a club, club and a half wind this afternoon so it was easier to keep it in play. You have to take advantage of the good side of the draw I think it was probably two or three shots easier judging by the scoring. Take it while you get it, not often it doesn’t play as not as difficult as normal.

There is a long way to go in the Island this week but Coughlan insists he will keep taking the big stick on sight over the weekend.

“Taking every day as it comes really and try keep the big number off the card and jostle for position and see how it goes. Going to keep taking driver out on holes, hopefully it stays straight and keep attacking. If you’re out of position it’s a grind for par on every single hole, once you get the tee shot away it’s game on really.”
