Boys and Girls British Amateur Championships gets underway

The Boys and Girls British Amateur Championships get under way today and run until Sunday with the Boys taking place at at Nairn and Nairn Dunbar while the Girls will be staged at Enville.

In the Boys Championship there is significant Irish interest in the 252 strong field with Mark Poser (Kilkenny), Raymond Cameron (Newlands), Liam Power (Galway), Thomas Mulligan (Laytown & Bettystown), Robert Moran (Castle), Jack Madden (Royal Portrush), Jordan Logo (Hilton Templepatrick), David Kist (Athenry), Allan Hill (Athenry), Jack Hearn (Tramore), Jack Doherty (Carton House), Charlie Denvir (Elm Park), John Brady (Rosslare) and Reece Black (Hilton Templepatrick) all taking part.

The Championship gets underway with two qualifying rounds of 18 holes. The 64 lowest scores over 36 holes, plus ties for 64th place, will progress to the match play stage which culminates in a 36 hole final.

In the Girls Championship Ireland will have five representatives in the 144 strong field ,Valerie Clancy (Killarney), Mairead Martin (Kanturk), Rachel Thompson (Cork), Lauren Walsh (Castlewarden) and Annabel Wilson (Lurgan). They will be joined by several of the world’s leading junior golfers including Caterina Don, Blanca Fernandez Garcia-Poggio, Lily May Humphreys and Isabella Holpfer, all of whom played in the Junior Vagliano Trophy match between Great Britain and Ireland and the Continent of Europe at Golf Club Bogogno in Italy earlier this summer.

The first stage of the championship comprises two qualifying rounds of stroke play before the leading 64 players progress to match play. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes including the final.
