Séamus Power will rue a closing bogey at Final Qualifying as he missed out on a place in next week’s US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Teeing it up for 36 holes in ‘golf’s longest day’ in Canada before this week’s RBC Canadian Open, Power looked set to make a nine-man playoff for the last three US Open spots when he raced to six-under through 35 holes.

But a bogey at the last proved fatal and despite respectable rounds of 67 and 67 at Lambton Golf and Country Club in Toronto he missed out on the playoff.

All is not lost for Power this week he still has one more role of the dice at the Canadian Open where a win would book his ticket to Shinnecock Hills and he would join Rory McIlroy, Pádraig Harrington, Shane Lowry and 2010 winner Graeme McDowell who is making his first major appearance since 2020.

Harrington and Lowry are also in the field this week in Toronto with the former bullish about his game heading into eight straight events.

“I’ve turned a corner,” Harrington, 54, told Golf Channel. “I turned the corner about three weeks ago with my putting, which has been night and day for me from what I’ve been like.

“I feel like I’m playing well physically, but it was the short game. The putting has been holding me back. So, yeah, look, I’m an optimist.

“I do actually feel like I can be competitive. People would say, ‘Oh, you need it really tough,’ but tough conditions can take anybody out of play.

“If we get 10 to 15 miles an hour here, I’ll be very happy in wind. If we get 15 to 20, maybe one day is okay, but God, it can blow anybody off the golf course when you get those 20-mile-an-hour winds.”
