Robert Moran was the only one of four Irishmen to make the cut at the Lacanau Alps Open in France, but the Castle man goes into the final round tied for 21st and five back.

A missed cut at last week’s Gosser Open was just the second time in eight Alps Tour starts that he failed to earn a final-round tee time, and though he dropped one place to third on the Alps Tour Order of Merit, he remained on course to finish the season inside the top five and earn promotion to the HotelPlanner Tour.

After making six birdies and five bogeys in a one-under 71 on day one, he managed to largely keep the mistakes off the card in round two. Two birdies on each side with just the one dropped shot saw him move to four-under, five shots off the leading duo and just two outside the top 10.

It was a week to forget otherwise, with Sam Murphy, Hugh Foley and Cathal MacCanna all missing the cut.

Spain’s Pablo Alperi and Grego Fernandez of Argentina share the lead at nine-under, with two further Spaniards, two Frenchmen and an Italian tied for second one shot adrift.
