John Doyle is well placed on his Brabazon Trophy debut as he sits in a share of 13th place after a second round of 70.
The Fota Island teenager is three-under through 36 holes but is a distant eleven shots behind runaway leader Tom Osborne who has catapulted seven shots clear after rounds of 62 and 66.
At just four shots off second place, Doyle has been impressive thus far at Moortown Golf Club in what is likely to be his last hurrah before sitting the Leaving Cert exams.
The 18-year-old made a fast start with three birdies in his first six holes but lost momentum with back to back birdies on the 9th and 10th but he avoided further damage with a birdie, bogey run on the 15th and 16th.
One shot behind Doyle is former Walker Cup star Matthew McClean after the Malone man carded a 69 to climb into the top-20. Like Doyle, he also made a quick start with three birdies in seven holes.
The big move of the day came from Gavin Tiernan as the County Louth man recovered from an opening 74 with a Friday 67 to make the cut and climb into 31st place on one-under alongside Isaac Oliver.
Tiernan, making his first appearance since returning from the US, birdied the first before rolling in three birdies on the spin on the 5th, 6th and 7th. He dropped a shot on the 9th but rallied again with back to back birdies on 11 and 12 before closing with a dropped shot.
Castleknock’s Paul Coughlan is level-par after back to back rounds of 71 while Mark Cadden made the cut on the number at plus two despite a second round of 76.
