Rowan Lester carded a third successive round in red figures to lie tied for 22nd and just two shots outside the top 10 heading into the final round of the Sunshine Tour’s Kit Kat Cash & Carry Pro-Am in Pretoria.
The Hermitage man started his moving day round on the 10th and hit the ground running, making back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 but hit a bump in the mid-section of the nine and found himself back at level for the day after consecutive bogeys on 14 and 15 before a birdie on 17 got him back in red figures at the turn.
He began the front side like he had the back and reeled off birdies on one and two and traded a further bogey on five with a birdie on eight to shoot a three-under-par 69 that moved him to -8 overall.
Despite an impressive rookie season last year, he has yet to finish higher than 14th on the South-African based tour, but another round in the 60s on Sunday should see him come very close to a personal best.
After rounds of 63 and 64 to open up a six-stroke lead, South African Gerhard Pepler looked set to race off into the sunset but a level-par 72 allowed the chasing pack to draw within two.
Wales’ Jack Davidson and South African duo Jaco Prinsloo and Christiaan Burke share second at -15 with a further three strokes separating them and the trio sharing fifth.
