John Murphy shot an opening two-under-par round of 70 to take a share of fifth place at the Clutch Pro Tour’s Crondon Park Classic in Essex and sits five shots off the lead.
The Kinsale man was slow out of the traps, making par on the each of the first five but dropping a shot on the par-5 sixth but a birdie on the eighth got him back to level-par.
Seven more pars followed on the inward loop, but back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 amounted to a good day’s work in tough and blustery afternoon conditions.
John Ross Galbraith was among the early starters off the 10th tee and he made two birdies and one bogey in a one-under 71 that leaves him tied for 13th.
Paul McBride, who sits in second place on the Clutch Pro Tour Order of Merit having won the Ashburnham Classic in his penultimate start, shot a level-par 72 in the afternoon, while Alex Maguire who finished in third place in the same event is one shot further adrift at +1 alongside Robert Brazill.
Dermot McElroy and Marc Boucher sit just above the projected cutline at +3, while Daniel Mulligan (+4), Rory Williamson (+5), Tom Dowdall (+6), and Brandon St. John (+7) all need to improve if they’re to see final round action.
Englishman Harry Goddard sits alone at the top after a five-under 67 which gives him a one-stroke lead over Gary King with Luca Houlgate and Ben Brown sharing fourth at -3.
