Waterford’s Séamus Power posted a two-under-par final round to cap off his weekend of ups and downs as the 39-year-old finished T60 at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic at Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Power made a fast start to his round, opening with back-to-back birdies at the first and second holes. Although he gave a shot back with a bogey shortly after, the two-time PGA TOUR winner responded well by picking up another birdie at the fourth to maintain his early momentum.
Power seemed to have moments of inconsistency throughout the weekend, and he had another on the final day. Power made birdie at the seventh, before following it up with three bogeys in a row – undoing all of his good work and taking him back to even-par through 10-holes.
From there, he added two more birdies to his round which came at the 15th and 18th – posting a two-under-par round, taking him to three-under-par for the weekend.
Power finished 15-strokes back from the winner Brandt Snedeker who earned his first win on the the PGA TOUR in eight years with a score of 18-under.
Snedeker made two birdies on the front nine, before finding his rythym on the back nine, pouring in four birdies to earn him the clubhouse lead whilst Mark Hubbard and Aaron Rai were still on course.
Posting a five-under-par 66, Snedeker couldn’t believe it when Hubbard made the same mistake as he did, hitting the right trees at the last to make bogey and hand over the win.
“It’s been a roller coaster. I feel amazing. I feel so lucky to still be out here still doing what I love to do, to have a chance to win a golf tournament at my age and to be able to pull it out is something super special. I’m just so pumped. I don’t know what else to say,” said the 45-year-old.
“To not have my card the last couple of years, to be struggling to do what I love, you know, to still have a passion to play this game the way I want to play it and to show people how I can still do it, especially not playing my best and struggling the way I did to come back and fight, claw my way back and play some great golf this year,” added Snedeker with tears in his eyes.
Hubbard missed the oppurtunity to earn his first ever win on the PGA TOUR. Hubbard posted a one-under-par 70 to finish 17-under.
“Yeah, I mean, super bummed. I definitely felt like it was going to be my day. I felt like I played, you know, really solid all week,” said Hubbard.
Speaking on the difficulty in the tough conditions, Hubbard said;”I had a few loose shots today overall, but I thought today played the toughest by far. I thought the pin locations were way, way tougher and with the conditions especially.”
Beau Hossler and Kevin Roy finished in a share of third at 16-under-par. Aaron Rai posted an even-par 71 to finish fifth at 15-under. Rai struggled midway through the final round, making four bogeys in a row to take him out of the running.
