Kildare’s Lauren Walsh posted a final round three-over-par as El Camaleon in Mexico as the 25-year-old finished her weeks work in T61 at five-over-par.
Unable to post an under-par round for the week, Walsh did struggle in Mexico and Sunday’s final round was no different.
Walsh began with a birdie at the first before following it up with a bogey at the second. Everything was going smoothly from there until Walsh made back-to-back doubles at the eighth and ninth to take the turn at four-over.
Leaving herself with a mountain to climb to get under par, Walsh could only make birdie at the par-5 18th to get to three-over.
Nelly Korda cruised to a four shot victory thanks to some great golf played between holes five and seven, where she made an eagle and two birdies to post a three under-par 69.
Korda went 60 consecutive holes without a bogey – that streak ended when it no longer mattered as Korda made bogey at the last.
She had a six-shot lead playing the 18th when she sent her drive to the right and deep into the tropical bushes, never finding the golf ball. She hit a provisional into a bunker, the next one into the gallery and finished by making a 20-foot putt for bogey to get to 17-under for the week.
Korda now has three wins already this season and has followed up last weeks major win at The Chevron Championship with another stellar performance.
“You put in the work. Everyone out here puts in the work. Sometimes it works out. I’m just grateful that I have an amazing team that no matter through the ups and downs we’ve all stayed the same. We all are super motivated, and we’re just happy to be out here,” said Korda.
Asked if she was playing the best golf of her career, Korda said; “I’m just enjoying myself and I love the competition. I love traveling to places like Mexico, all over the world. I’m just having fun.”
Korda now has 18 wins on the LPGA, making the 27-year-old the youngest American with 18 titles since Nancy Lopez in 1980.
Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol finished in second place at 13-under-par after a final round score of two-under-par. Yubol is followed by China’s Yu Liu who finished just one behind at 12-under.
Colombian amateur Maria Jose Marin secured a top five finish with a score of eight-under which makes her eligible for next weeks Mizuho Americas Open, but the college kid has finals.
“The experience overall here in Mexico was amazing. I think coming into the week I was pretty grateful that I got to compete in my second home. I was born here in Mexico, so it’s always good to be back,” said Marin.
