Paul McBride is just outside the top 10 after the opening round of the Clutch Pro Tour’s Ashburnham Classic in South Wales.
The Island man carded a two-under-par round of 70 in the afternoon wave when scoring proved considerably tougher. He reeled off three birdies in succession from the fourth, and though he dropped a shot on eight, added two further birdies on 11 and 14 to move to -4.
Bogeys on 17 and 18 was a disappointing way to close out his round, but his 70 leaves him tied for 11th and of the 10 players ahead of him, only Englishman Timothy Shin at -3 had a late tee time on day one.
Alex Maguire, also in the afternoon wave, was going along nicely and made it to three-under with four holes to play, before carding bogeys on 15 and 18 and a double on 17 to slip back to one-over-par and into a share of 40th.
Tyler Hogarty is one ahead of him, with John Murphy, Daniel Mulligan, John Ross Galbraith and Dermot McElroy one behind at +2.
Robert Brazill and Marc Boucher (+3), and Brandon St John (+5) will all need to produce the goods in round two if they’re to make it to the third and final round, though the wind is expected to be a more constant feature throughout the entire second round.
Englishman Max Orrin, who teed off at 07:40, leads the way after a bogey-free six-under, with Wales’ James Frazer and two further Englishmen in Charlie Thornton and Billy Spooner sharing second at four-under, two shots back.
