US President Donald Trump interrupted his speech at a State dinner with King Charles to heap praise on back to back Masters champion Rory McIlroy, lauding his “unconquerable courage.”
McIlroy is not in the field for this week’s Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral but he was suited and booted for the State visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla at the White House. The Holywood man became the fourth player to successfully defend the Masters earlier this month and his achievement was given special recognition by the US President.
“The entire world has been uplifted by this distinct and special character we share. This unstoppable daring, this unconquerable courage. It really is, it’s unconquerable,” Trump declared.
“Speaking of that, where’s Rory McIlroy? Can you stand up Rory, will you, please?
“That was unconquerable courage. That was very good Rory. I don’t know if that helps him talking about how wonderful the speech… but I had to interrupt my speech because I watched that man win a tournament that was a tough one.
“Congratulations, very proud of you.”
McIlroy is a surprise absences from the Cadillac Championship but Shane Lowry is in the field. McIlroy’s next PGA Tour appearance and first since his Augusta National triumph will be at next week’s Truist Championship – another signature event – at Quail Hollow, a course he has won at four times in his career.
