In a round that consisted of three-birdies, three bogeys, and a double, Tyrone native Darren Clarke did well to limit the damages and posted a two-over-par 74 at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Louisiana.
The Mitsubishi Electric Classic is being played under the Modified Stableford scoring format, meaning that Clarke’s round ended up gaining him zero points to show for the day’s efforts.
It was a rough start for Clarke, as the 2011 Open champion made bogey at the first hole. The 57-year-old then managed to gather momentum, making two birdies on the bounce at the second and third hole
Clarke’s worst moment came at the par-4 ninth after a couple of misplaced chip-shots saw Clarke make a harsh double bogey, undoing his earlier work in the round.
Eighteen-hole leader Zach Johnson who sits at 28-over scored 13 points in Modified Stableford on Saturday and sits three points ahead of World Golf Hall of Fame member Retief Goosen who’s at 15-points to take himself three shots back entering the final round of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic presented by Vensure.
With a win, Johnson would match Stephen Ames, Scott McCarron and Phil Mickelson for the most wins at TPC Sugarloaf in PGA TOUR-sanctioned events
There is a four-way tie for T3 heading into the final round as Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini, and USA’s David Duval, George McNeill , and Ben Crane each sit at 21 points.
Three-time champion Stephen Ames scored 18 points, the most points on Saturday (+16) and enters the final round sitting T10.
Tournament host and Charles Schwab Cup leader Stewart Cink sits T16 at 16 points. Cink won his two most recent starts.
