Two years ago, Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy teamed up to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and though McIlroy has opted to skip the event his year, Lowry has a more than capable partner at his side as he pairs up with Brooks Koepka.
On Tuesday, Lowry joined Chantel McCabe on the Sirius XM PGA Tour radio channel to explain how the partnership with the five-time major-winning American came about.
“Well, I’m playing,” he explained, “and obviously my partner from the last two years told me that he wasn’t going to play.
“I’ve known Brooks a while, and I’m friendly with Ricky Elliott, his caddie, so I said it to Ricky. I knew Brooks was probably going to have to play because he’s not in many of the Signature Events, so I asked Ricky if Brooks was going to play.
“We’re both Srixon players, so it kind of fits a little bit, and he’s obviously a very good player and I want to go there and try to win so that would be nice.”
After beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff at TPC Louisiana, McIlroy and Lowry headed for the city’s famous Bourbon Street area in the French Quarter, where a viral video showed the duo celebrating with a karaoke version of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’.
Will there be a repeat of the celebrations with Koepka taking over lead vocal duties if the new partnership finds themselves on top of the leaderboard on Sunday evening?
“I don’t know, we’ll see,” Lowry laughed when asked if Koepka could sing. “If we’re finding out on the Sunday night, that would be a good thing.”
Couldn’t get a word in @McIlroyRory 😂☘️ https://t.co/cAMcKboqys
