Bryson DeChambeau’s nightmarish week in Mexico has come to a premature end after he withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury.
DeChambeau had been ratty all week, expressing his displeasure at the course condition at LIV Golf Mexico City’s Club de Golf Chapultepec and he had also failed to perform, sitting on two-over, sixteens hots behind Jon Rahm.
It caps a miserable fortnight for the two-time US Open champion who had a case of the shambles in the sand at Augusta National on his way to a comical missed cut last week.
DeChambeau will now turn his attention to trying to recover in time for LIV Golf Virginia.
In a statement, DeChambeau said: “I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday’s round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury.
“Not how I wanted this week to go, but wishing the Crushers a strong finish. I’m going to take a few days to get evaluated and hope to be ready for LIV Golf Virginia.”
The wind seems to come out of DeChambeau’s sails after winning events in Singapore and South Africa heading into the Masters. He was replaced in Sunday’s final round in Mexico by local player Luis Carrera who will compete for Crushers GC tonight.
DeChambeau’s mid-tournament withdrawal adds to a turbulent week for LIV Golf, following reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) is set to end its financial support towards the circuit.
LIV chief executive Scott O’Neil told TNT Sport that reports of LIV going bust were wide of the mark.
“It’s just not the way the world works. We have commitments to have this being a going concern.
