Alex Maguire’s final-round level-par 73 saw him move to the front of an Irish pack on a rather disappointing final round at the Clutch Pro Tour’s Q Hotels Collection Open at Forest Pines in England.
Back-to-back rounds of 72 saw the Laytown & Bettystown man enter the final round on -2 but only six back, and three bogeys in his first four holes ended any outside hopes he was harbouring of slicing through the pack to contend for a first professional victory. A birdie on five stemmed the bleeding, and he went birdie-bogey-birdie over the first three holes on the back nine before a final birdie on 17 got him back to level-par for the day and he finished tied for 26th.
Robert Brazill began the day alongside Maguire on the leaderboard, and birdies on three and eight got him to -4 before a bogey on nine. Two more birdies on 10 and 12 got him to within touching distance of the top 10, but a poor finish where he dropped shots on 13, 16, 17 and 18 saw him slip back to -1 overall and into a share of 30th.
Paul McBride began the day at the head of the Irish quartet at -4, but double bogeys on his second and second-last holes with three birdies and two bogeys in between was not the final round he was looking for and he finished alongside Brazill at -1.
James Sugrue rounded out the Irish interest and he closed with a two-over 75 to finish tied for 44th at +2.
England’s David Langley’s 66 was the low round of the day and it helped propel him into a playoff with fellow countryman Callum Farr at -13, and Langley maintained his hot hand to secure his second successive victory after triumphing at the CADDY COMPS Championship a fortnight ago.
