Roganstown star Patrick Keeling shot a sublime round of 66 to qualify for next month’s 119th Southern Amateur Championship.
Keeling qualified in a share of second place on six-under at Black Creek Club in Chattanooga where there was three spots on the line for the main championship.
The Dubliner will take his place in one of the most prestigious amateur fields in the American game at Blessings Golf Club from 16th – 19th of July.
The Southern Amateur has been played since 1902 and is organised by the Southern Golf Association. From 1902 to 1963, it was played as match play. Since 1964, it has been played as stroke play.
Winners of the championship include Bobby Jones, Ben Crenshaw, Bob Tway, Justin Leonard, Webb Simpson, Harris English, David Ford and Ding Wenyi.
Keeling just completed his second year in the University of Louisville and he will have a familiar face at the Cardinals next year when Ireland’s Adam Buchanan joins the roster.
Buchanan joins the Cards after spending one season at Keiser University where he won the NAIA Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award.
A native of Ballyclare, Northern Ireland, Buchanan became the fifth player to be named the top freshman in the nation and the second player in school history to be named as a finalist for the Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award.
Buchanan recorded five top-10 finishes in ten events last season.
