There are some titles where the associated prizemoney are a distant afterthought, and the U.S. Open is one such event. That doesn’t mean that the winner’s bank account won’t receive an extremely healthy lodgement.
Less than a year ago, J.J. Spaun found himself outside the top 125 in the FedEx Cup Rankings and was considering his future in professional golf, but now he’s got over four million reasons to think he made the right choice. Along with a five-year exemption into the Masters, Open Championship and PGA Championship, a five-year guaranteed PGA Tour card, and entry into the next 10 U.S. Opens, the Californian collects a cheque for $4.3 million.
Robert MacIntyre, despite winning twice on the PGA Tour in 2024, along with three previous DP World Tour successes, also collects the highest paycheque of his career, receiving $2,322,000 for his solo runner-up finish.
Despite admitting that he didn’t really care whether he made the cut or not, Rory McIlroy did and his final-round 67 ensured that not only did he get a cut of the prizefund, it was a healthy chunk with $242,532 coming his way for a share of 19th.
Leading amateur Justin Hastings from the Cayman Islands was the only one of the 66 players who made the cut to go home empty handed from a financial perspective, but even though Laurie Canter, who finished on the same tally as the recent San Diego State graduate collected over $46,000, Hastings has bolstered his chances of becoming a PGA Tour professional once he turns pro as he’ll receive plenty of invitations and a direct ticket to Q-School finals should he wish to go.
