Thomas Higgins carded a superb round of 65 on the Old Course to boost his hopes of winning the St Andrews Links Trophy.
Higgins is nine-under-par and just three shots behind Scotland’s Cameron Adam heading into the final 36 holes on Sunday.
The Roscommon man broke the back of his round with a blistering front nine of 31 where he made five birdies including three in a row from the third before rolling in two more on the 7th and 9th.
The Clemson Tigers golfer added birdies on the 12th and 18th to lie in solo third place.
Matthew McClean will be looking to finish as high as possible to boost his Walker Cup bid after a second round of 68.
It could have been lower for the Malone man who double bogeyed the 17th hole to fall back to four-under-par and a share of 16th place, eight off the pace.
McClean roared out of the traps with back to back birdies before he made four birdies in six holes on the 7th, 9th, 11th and 12th.
McClean lies alongside Fota Island teenager John Doyle who carded a round of 71.
Sean Keeling and Caolan Rafferty made the cut on the number and are ten shots off the pace on two-under after both players carded rounds of 69 and they are alongside Colm Campbell.
