Shane Lowry is focused on the job at hand at the RBC Canadian Open and is blocking out the US Open noise after some horror stories from Oakmont started circulating during the week.
Lowry was supposed to play a practice round at Oakmont on Monday but gave it a swerve and he has been rewarded with rounds of 64 and 68 in Toronto to leave himself four shots behind Cameron Champ on eight-under in seventh place.
“I was supposed to go on Monday, but I didn’t fancy beating myself up after a week at The Memorial, so I didn’t bother,” Lowry said after opening with a bogey on 10 but responding with birdies the 13th, 15th and 5th.
Lowry held the 54-hole lead at the 2016 US Open at Oakmont and revealed last week that he walked in after a handful of holes during a practice round nine years ago so he knows more than most the challenge the golf course will present.
But for now, he is focused on getting a first individual win since the 2022 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
“I’m going to block out the noise of what everyone is saying,” Lowry said.
“You read online and think 25 over is going to win, but when you look at the forecast, it’s going to rain the first few days. So that’s going to make your course probably a bit more playable.
“So we’ll see. You just have to take it one day at a time and one step at a time and see what happens.”
