Aideen Walsh finds herself tied for the lead going into the third and final round of the European Mid-Amateur Championships at Quinta do Peru in Portugal, but she’s not the only Irishwoman gunning for glory as Jessica Ross trails her by just one shot.
On another day of tough scoring south of the Portuguese capital, Walsh ground out a one-over 73 that included three birdies and four bogeys to improve from the T2 position she held at the conclusion of round one and she sits alongside French duo Alexandra Farrat and Pauline Stein at the head of affairs.
But the day’s biggest mover was Clandeboye’s Ross. +6 after day one, she carded a two-under round of 70 on day two – one of only two rounds in red figures on either day from the 53-woman field – and that vaulted her up into solo fourth, two clear of her nearest challenger and just one behind the leading trio.
Laytown and Bettystown’s Ellen O’Gorman remains on course for a top 10 finish and has an outside chance of claiming victory after a 76 that sees her on +7 and sharing sixth, while Shannon Burke from Ballinrobe and Clodagh Coughlan of Douglas (+14) and Doonbeg’s Aoife Kelly (+17) all made it safely into the top 33 who advance to Saturday’s final round.
Walsh will be in the final grouping and gets underway at 12:18 local time, with Ross playing in the penultimate group.
