Stuart Grehan finds himself in a share of second place after the second and penultimate round of the Men’s European Mid-Amateur Championships at Quinta do Peru in Portugal after a two-under 70.
The Tullamore native representing County Louth Golf Club was one of just four players from the 90-man field to card a round in red figures on day two, but he’ll potentially need to go even lower on the final day if he’s to overturn a five-stroke deficit to runaway leader Christopf Kogl from Austria.
Grehan started fast with a birdie on one, but after six pars, traded a bogey on eight with another birdie on nine to turn at -1. Another birdie followed on the par-5 13th, and eight pars on the remaining holes on the back side was enough to see him climb three places on the leaderboard.
But Kogl will prove a tough nut to crack as the only player in the field to card back-to-back rounds under par.
Darragh Flynn of Carton House and Mark Shanahan from Rosslare are locked together in a share of 25th after matching each other’s rounds of 74, while Grehan’s clubmate Evan Farrell also made it through to the final round after a round of 76 that leaves him sharing 44th.
Shanahan, who is also competing in the Men’s 40+ category, goes into the final round tied for sixth in that division, but he’ll have to overturn an eight-stroke deficit if he’s to get his hands on the silverware.
