Lauren Walsh revealed some wise words from her coach Shane O’Grady set her in good stead as she roared into a share of the lead at the Tenerife Women’s Open.

With O’Grady’s pre-tournament advice ringing in her ears, Walsh, who teed off in the last group, fired a five-under 67 to join Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen at the summit at Abama Golf.

Walsh began on the back nine and bookended her opening half with birdies before three birdies in five holes after the turn propelled her alongside Nielsen as she hunts her maiden Ladies European Tour victory.

“We were last out so it’s been a long day,“ Walsh said.

“But I played nicely. I hit it pretty consistently and holed a lot of putts. There’s a couple quirky holes so you have to plod your way around and play smart golf.

“It’s definitely tricky, but thankfully my coach has been out here quite a lot so he had me briefed on a lot of the golf course before I got here. So I sort of knew what to expect. In general, it sets things up very well for me and I’m really happy.”

There was also a bright start for Elm Park’s Anna Foster who is four off the pace on one-under after a 71 and she lies in a share of 17th place.

Canice Screene is back in the pack on three-over after a round of 75 while Annabel Wilson and Sara Byrne have work to do to make the cut from five-over after rounds of 77.
