Michael Young continues to lead the way for the Irish at the Alps Tour’s Alps de Andalucia-Roquetas de Mar, as Hugh Foley and Ronan Mullarney will also contest the final round at Playa Serena.
An opening four-under 66 left Young just three shots in arrears, but after birdieing his second hole – the 11th – two bogeys on his opening nine holes on day two left him on one-over at the turn.
Birdies on the third and sixth holes got him back into red figures, and his five-under tally leaves him tied for 11th going into the final round, but seven shots in arrears of Italian Andrea Romano who shot back-to-back six-under 64s.
Hugh Foley is two shots further adrift after a two-under 68. The Royal Dublin man had worked his way to -3 for the week thanks to three birdies on his way out, but a double bogey on the par-3 second (his 11th) left him looking over his shoulder at the cutline.
A final birdie on the fifth provided some additional breathing space, and the cutline drift meant he had three shots to spare at the end of the day.
Ronan Mullarney’s 67 was the round of the day from an Irish perspective. After a one-over 71 on Wednesday, the Galway man knew he’d need a round in the 60s to have any chance of a final-round tee time and he went bogey-free, carding birdies on 15, five and seven to book safe passage
Marc Boucher and Robert Moran began the day on the same scoreline as Mullarney, with John Murphy one stroke better off, but all three missed the cut. Boucher came closest, but a bogey on the 11th ended up proving costly as he parred his way home but missed out by one.
At the head of affairs, Romano enjoys a two-stroke lead over first-round-leader, Paul Margolis of France, with another Italian in Francesco Santoni one shot further adrift in solo third place at -9.
