Michael Young carded a four-under 66 for a share of sixth place on day one of the Alps Tour’s Alps de Andalucia-Roquetas de Mar at Club de Golf Playa Serena in southern Spain.

The Paris-born Irishman birdied the third, fifth and sixth holes to make an early move, then carded 11 straight pars before signing off with his fourth birdie of the day on 18 to record a bogey-free round that leaves him three shots off the lead.

Hugh Foley is next best on -1 after trading five birdies with two bogeys and a double to share 28th place, and he and Young were the only Irishmen to finish the day in red figures.

John Murphy too had an up-and-down day with an eagle, three birdies and five bogeys resulting in a level-par tally that leaves him straddling the provisional cutline albeit on the right side, tied for 36th with the top 40 and ties progressing to Friday’s final round.

Just on the other side are Ronan Mullarney, Robert Moran and Marc Boucher who shot matching one-over 71s and they’ll likely need to shoot something in the 60s if they’re to find themselves with Friday tee times.

At the top of the leaderboard, Frenchman Paul Margolis has sole possession of the lead after a seven-under 63. The one-time Alps Tour winner has missed the cut in seven of his eight Alps Tour starts in 2025, but there was no sign of that as he fired nine birdies enroute to the top.

He enjoys a one-stroke lead over Italians Francesco Santoni and Andrea Romano, with another Italian in Manfredi Manica and Spaniard Alfonso Buendia one shot further adrift at -5.
