Liam Grehan credited muscle memory for his shootout mentality after he came through his third Sunshine Tour pre-tournament qualifier to book his spot in this week’s Gary & Vivienne Player Challenge.

Grehan finished birdie, birdie to card a one-under 71 at Benoni Country Club, a golf course he knows well from q-school last year and he is looking forward to teeing it up again and building on his first made cut of the season last week.

“Plenty of stress I had to finish birdie, birdie so there was enough stress but I’m getting used to it now,” said Grehan who feels the PGA in Ireland circuit has prepared him well for needing to go low in one day events.

“It’s the one day pro-ams, a shootout gives me an advantage in these pre-qualifiers!

“It will be a cool event this week with the Gary Player Challenge so I’m pretty sure he’ll be here. It’s a class golf course I knew it pretty well from First Stage of Q-School last year the greens are rapid so just thrilled to get through. I did a lot of work last week and made a few changes so they held up.”

This week will be one of two events remaining before the Sunshine Tour takes a summer break and Grehan plans to return home to Ireland to compete on the PGA in Ireland region before returning to South Africa in August.

“It sets me up nicely because I’ve learned a few things that are different that I can work on at home. Hitting it a little bit higher without losing strike, working on a few little things. Playing in Ireland and flighting it doesn’t quite work out here. So nice to get home and work on a few things for the main season out here.”

Grehan will join Rowan Lester in the tournament field this week.
