Pádraig Harrington lost out on a second senior major title as a nightmare finish gifted the Senior PGA Championship to Angel Cabrera after a dramatic final round at Congressional Country Club.

Leading by two shots on ten-under-par, Harrington double bogeyed the 15th to fall back into a share of the lead with Cabrera before a three-putt bogey from 30-feet on the 18th saw him sign for a gut wrenching 68 to put him two behind Cabrera on seven-under.

Cabrera could afford to bogey the 18th for a 69 and win by one shot for his second senior major win in six days after he won the Regions Tradition on Monday.

“I’m extremely happy after winning two tournaments in a row, and also three tournaments within a year. I’m extremely happy especially after everything that happened throughout all years,” said Cabrera who now has three Champions Tour victories since he was released from prison in August 2023 after spending 30 months behind bars for gender violence.

“I didn’t know it was going to happen this quickly winning two tournaments in a row, especially with all these great players around this tour.

“So, yeah, I feel very emotional and proud.”

Harrington made a blistering start to his final round, opening with back to back birdies before birdies on the 6th and 8th put him into the lead on his own.

The 53-year-old looked to be on his way to a triumphant come from behind victory when he rolled in birdies on the 11th, 12th and 14th before disaster struck and he was forced to share second place with Thomas Bjorn.

Darren Clarke also closed with a final round of 68 to share eleventh place on three-under-par.
